  • Hot Onion Dip

Let me prelude this by saying I am in love with allrecipes.com. This site has just about every recipe and variation of recipe that I could ever want.

Tonight I had some friends over for a little jewelry get together. I was running around, scrambling, looking for something to make because a) the party was quickly creeping up on me and I wasn’t prepared, and b) I am crunched for time with work.

I wanted to make something that I hadn’t made before, that was different, but a little in season and also quick. I settled on this recipe for Hot Onion Dip. I was very excited to try it instead of my usual spinach & artichoke dip.

I guess I was expecting more. Even though it was simple, it wasn’t anything I’ll be making again for a long time. I followed the recipe without any variations, and I wish I’d had more time to maybe sautee the onions or thought to add a little something extra. Minus the onion flavor, it was very bland, and tasted too cream-cheesy. It was delicious while it was hot, but after it settled, the consistency went back to that of cream cheese and had to be reheated before we could dig into it again.

I’ve definitely learned my lesson about the quick and simple way of doing things. Sometimes, that little extra TLC is what makes the dish. So go that extra inch, spare that extra ten minutes to sautee those onions, and add your own unique spin to things. Easy just doesn’t quite cut it.

  • So I realize I’ve never posted here yet besides my intro post thing. I’m very sorry and for that I can only say that I haven’t been doing much housewife-ing since I got back from vacation because we’re short staffed at work and just finally starting to get people trained. I know it doesn’t seem like an excuse but I come home literally DRAINED. I cooked for the first time in a few weeks the other night and just boiled noodles and topped with Ragu from the can.

That being said, I’d just like to share one tip I’ve figured out. The other day I went to grab some milk, but found that I had none in my refrigerator. It wasn’t until I was looking for something else in my cupboard that I realized I HAVE DRY MILK. Its not the same as regular milk, obviously, but it gets the job done. Plus, you don’t have to use it really quick like regular old milk. I think it has a shelf life of something like to years?

Moral of the story: Keep dry milk on hand. It’s kind of a lifesaver.

  • Welcome Post

Hi! Welcome to The Closet Housewife.

Let me start off by saying that I am not a housewife, I am not married.  I am a single woman who is still mastering her domestic skills.  For example, tonight I was making a boxed(!) dinner, and all that was required of me to do extra was cook chicken. I burned it. Yes, it was all black and charred on the outside. Once you got past that, it was delicious. The chicken, I mean, not the dinner.

Which brings me to the reason I’m here.  I like nice things, and I like taking pride in my work. I also like to learn new things and try new recipes and share my decorating skills with people. That being said, I would like to think of this blog as a place to share and chronicle my successes and failures around the (not so very big or accommodating) apartment. Here I will be sharing pictures, telling of my adventures and inviting you to try some recipes that I enjoyed. I invite your input, and your thoughts on processes, or anything you may think!

So welcome, and I hope you enjoy! I’ll have this place up and running regularly soon, I hope!
